Transform Your Lawn with Lawn Dressing
Lawn Dressing: What It’s Used For, When to Apply It & How to Do It Properly

A healthy, green lawn starts with healthy soil. One of the simplest and most effective ways to improve your lawn is by using lawn dressing. Whether your lawn is looking uneven, tired, or patchy, lawn dressing can help restore its appearance and improve overall growth.
What Is Lawn Dressing Used For?

Lawn dressing is a fine blend of soil, sand, and organic matter that is spread over the surface of an existing lawn. It is used to:
- Level uneven areas by filling in small dips and hollows
- Improve soil quality by adding nutrients and organic matter
- Encourage stronger root growth
- Repair thin or damaged patches
- Improve drainage, especially in heavy or compacted soils
Over time, lawns naturally become compacted and depleted of nutrients. Lawn dressing helps rejuvenate the soil and creates better growing conditions for grass.
When Should You Use Lawn Dressing?

The best time to apply lawn dressing is when grass is actively growing so it can recover quickly and grow through the new layer.
Ideal times:
- Spring – to refresh lawns after winter
- Early summer – for general improvement
- Early autumn – to help lawns recover from heat and wear
Avoid applying lawn dressing:
- In mid-winter when grass growth is slow
- During extreme heat or drought
- Just before heavy rain, as the dressing may wash away
For best results, lawn dressing can be combined with overseeding and fertilising.
How to Use Lawn Dressing

1. Mow the lawn short
Cut the grass slightly lower than normal so the dressing can reach the soil surface easily.
2. Remove thatch and debris
Rake the lawn to remove dead grass and loosen the surface.
(Thatch is the layer of dead and living grass material that builds up between the green grass blades and the soil surface)
3. Apply the lawn dressing
Spread a thin, even layer (about 3–5 mm thick) over the lawn using a shovel or wheelbarrow.
4. Work it into the lawn
Use a rake or stiff broom to brush the dressing down between the grass blades. The grass should still be visible and not completely covered.
5. Water lightly
Gently water the lawn to help settle the dressing into the soil.
6. Maintain moisture
Keep the lawn lightly moist for the next 1–2 weeks while the grass grows through the dressing.
Tips for Best Results
- Mix lawn dressing with grass seed when repairing bare patches
- For badly uneven lawns, apply in thin layers over time rather than all at once
- Apply fertiliser about 1–2 weeks after dressing for an extra growth boost
